Format & Purpose

teachers heart apleThis book/blog is something of an experiment. I wrote the beginnings of a book about education – my third – beginning about three years ago, when I worked full-time as a head of school. Today, I work full-time doing other things.

I’d written about a hundred pages in manuscript, and to make it a full-on book I’d have had to expand it by about 150 pages – but I’d said what I’d wanted to say already. And based on my past experiences, I’d have had to work to find the right publisher, and then wait about 18 months for the book to come out. I put the pages in a virtual drawer instead.

And then a few weeks ago I had a look again, liked what I saw, and decided that I would simply publish it on a blog platform – mostly because I want to applaud the great teachers out there, and show them some love.

I haven’t changed the tenses, so I speak in the present of working at my old school. Any my favorite teacher of all – my daughter – had not yet taken up the cudgels, so she is spared praise here. I will remedy that shortcoming in the future, I am sure.

I think the book reads as a small collection of short essays. The more personal material is towards the end. The main page only lists the first 25 essays – you can link to the rest from the Table of Contents page.

Thanks for reading, and if you wish to send me a note, you can find me at peter[at sign]iloinstitute[dot]us.
